The neck and the head area are two important areas for diagnosing health problems. To examine your pet whether it is sick or not, it is essential that the two of you are comfortable with each other. If you diagnose an inflated lymph node early, then that could save your dog's life.

To examine your dog, check the mouth area first. In cats, feline acne is common and it usually appears on the cat's chin area. Calendula is an effective treatment for this problem. Calendula is applied topically. Your pet's lips should be smooth. There should be no signs of swelling at all. For dogs, treat saliva accumulating in their mouth with hibitane, a type of medicated antiseptic.

Now move towards the inner part of the mouth. Open your pet's lips and check its teeth. Depending on the breed of your pet, the gums should be pink and healthy. Look for inflamed gums. They usually are dark in color and bleed when touched. If there are signs of gingivitis in your pet, take it to the vet for dental cleaning.

Recurring gingivitis could be treated with lactoferrin. Just give your pet half of the regular 350 mg capsule. Administer it daily. Mix it with baby food or syrup so your pet will take it. Propolis can also be applied directly to the affected gums. Propolis is a type of oral antiseptic produced by honeybees.

For ulcers of the mouth, Calendula lotion is effective as it can heal damaged tissues. As for teeth, there are supposed to be 42 in dogs and 32 in cats. Make sure that not one of them is cracked or broken. The roots should rest deep inside the gums.

Look for feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions in teeth. It can be found near the gum line where teeth start. FORL looks like tooth erosion. The only solution to this is tooth extraction. Check with your vet if that is necessary.

Near the jaw and the neck, you should find the parotid salivary grand and the submandibular lymph nodes. Normally you should not feel anything in that area. But if you feel anything that swells right there, your pet might have some sort of infection in the body.

Aside from the jaw and the neck are, there's also a lymph node near the shoulder blades. There's also another in the hind leg near behind the knee. It's called the poplital lymph nodes. It could swell due to local or generalized infection. Worse, it could be because of cancer.

If you feel any swelling lymph node, have your veterinarian check it out. Lymph node inflammation could be serious. And it is really important to discover it early. There are herbal medicines that can be used to address lymph node problems. These are green tea, essiac tea, garlic, carnitine, and bugleweed.
Green tea is known to inhibit tumor growth. Dosage is usually 200 mg per 40 lbs daily. Essiac tea is actually a combination of different herbs. And like green tea, it inhibits the growth of tumor. Garlic is an antioxidant. This one's for dogs only and the dose is one clove for every 50 lbs of body weight daily. Carnitine is effective in reversing hyperthyroid diseases. For cats, the dose is 250 mg daily. Bugleweed is another remedy for hyperthyroid disease. Just one drop is required twice daily.
